Farmers fear to go to farms due to attacks by Fulani herdsmen

Dedeso (E/R), March 12, GNA - Farmers in five communities in the Fanteakwa District are scared to go to their farms due to constant attacks on them by Fulani herdsmen.

Farmers from Dedeso, Osubao, Akumeso, Motara and Brabrameteng told the GNA that the herdsmen often assaulted them and even rape the women.

No locally grown rice in Koforidua

Koforidua, March 11, GNA - Despite the efforts being made to encourage Ghanaians to consume locally produced rice it is not easy to find one at the Koforidua market.

Out of over 20 shops surveyed by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in the central part of the New Juaben Municipality, only one shop located in an obscure corner behind the South Akim Rural Bank was the place, which deals in locally produced rice.

Effutu Assembly acquires land for Youth in Agriculture Programme

Winneba (C/R), March 8, GNA - The Effutu Municipal Assembly in conjunction with the International Labour Organisation, has acquired 250 acres of land in the area for the implementation of Government's Youth in Agriculture Programme.

Fifty acres of the land, located at Ateitu, Gyahadze, Nsuekyir, New Winneba and Atekyedo have been ploughed for the cultivation of maize, cassava and vegetables.

Thailand taps IITA’s expertise as cassava mealybug invades Asia

The Thai Department of Agriculture at Chatuchak, Bangkok, has contacted the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for help in the biological control of the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti, which had recently invaded Thailand and probably also Laos and Cambodia.

New project to identify best approaches to improve agriculture

Accra, March 2, GNA - The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has launched a new project dubbed "Global Futures for Agriculture" to improve agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability in developing countries.

The project, which will be focusing on evaluating promising technologies, investments, and policy reforms, is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The review of the Cocoa Sector Development Strategy (I), approved by government in April 1999 would occupy the attention of professionals drawn from academia, the business community, the cocoa industry, labour and farmers' organisations who have convened at GIMPA in Accra to make inputs into the new document.

Cadbury transfers 500,000 pounds to farmers

Accra, Feb. 24, GNA - Cadbury Dairy Milk has transferred over 500,000 pounds in premium to cocoa farmers in the country as a result of the company's purchase of Fairtrade cocoa.

Mr. James Boateng, Managing Director of Cadbury Ghana, who announced this, said the premiums will go directly into projects that farmers had determined, including building wells and mobile health clinics and funding for carbon reduction schemes.
